Sunday School

Orono United Methodist Church offers Sunday School classes year-round for children and youth ages 3-grade 8. High School students serve as assistants for the younger classes. Children and youth participate in the beginning of the morning worship with their families. Early in the service the students participate in a Children’s Message and prayer. Following this time the students, teachers and assistants leave the sanctuary and go to the Sunday School area. Sunday School begins with a circle time in which all students gather for attendance, the Lord’s Prayer, a time of offering, announcements, worship in song, and a Bible Story. Students then split up into age appropriate groups for lessons and activities to deepen their understanding of the Bible story, how to use the Bible, and how to apply God’s Word in their lives. Sunday School ends with a time of prayer. To ensure the safety of little ones, parents of children under age 9 are asked to meet their children in the classroom following worship. The first Sunday of each month is Communion Sunday. On this Sunday all classes stay together to focus on a service or mission project, such as preparing songs for a visit to a nursing home or learning about a mission project the church is involved in. Just before communion starts, teachers will bring students back to the sanctuary so that they may participate in communion with their families. We adhere to the United Methodist Church Safe Sanctuaries policies.

Nursery/Childcare

Childcare is provided during the worship service for children under age 3. The nursery is equipped with cribs, infant and toddler toys, child-sized furniture and a changing table with supplies. If you would like to keep your child with you in the sanctuary there are activity bags and books available for children to use and there is a rocker for parents to sit in with their child.

Youth Group

Youth Group is offered for students in grades 6-12. Youth Group meetings and events offer students opportunities to grow in their understanding of God and their faith, and to develop friendships with one another, through times of learning, fellowship, worship and service. At least 2 or more adults are present at each meeting. Please call the church office for dates and times of meetings. (866-4605)

Outreach and Service Opportunities for Children, Youth and Families

Orono United Methodist Church offers many different opportunities for children and youth to reach out to others with Christ’s love within and outside of the church. Recent events have included making crafts for and visiting area nursing homes, collecting toys and food for Crossroads Ministries, collecting money for orphans in India, presenting a Christmas pageant and singing in worship. Families are encouraged to join their children in these events.

Vacation Bible School

In addition to Sunday School classes in the summer we offer a week-long Vacation Bible School for students ages 3-entering grade 6. This is a wonderful chance for children to grow in their faith as they learn about God through Bible stories, music, drama, games, and crafts. Children have an opportunity to share what they have learned with their families at a special worship time during the Sunday Worship following VBS. This time is followed by a cookout. Watch the bulletin and website for more information!
